Department Responsibilities and Personnel

The primary mission of the Department of Public Safety falls into 3 areas of responsibility; POLICE, FIRE, and EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONSE. The Department delivers these emergency services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days per year.

Full Time Sworn Public Safety Officers

The Department of Public Safety is staffed with a Director, two Sergeants, and five Public Safety Officers.  Each of these full-time employees are certified as Police Officers, Firefighters, and Medical First Responders.

Part Paid Fire and Emergency Medical Personnel

There are also 10 part-paid firefighter positions within the Department of Public Safety. These part-time employees are on call to answer fire and medical emergencies in the City of Essexville. They are certified through the State of Michigan as Firefighters and Medical First Responders.

Director's Spotlight

Parking is prohibited on all City streets from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. Though the primary purpose of the parking ban is to facilitate snow removal, street sweeping and other public works maintenance activities, the Department of Public Safety constantly monitors this parking ordinance because it is felt that its strict enforcement also reduces vandalism and theft from vehicles that would otherwise be parked on the street over night. The fine for a violation of this ordinance is $5.00.

Gun Safety Locks

The Department of Public Safety is participating in a state sponsored "Gun Safety Lock" program and is offering the program to Essexville residents at no charge.  Any resident who owns a semi-automatic pistol or shotgun should stop into the Department and pick up a gun lock to secure their firearm from being accidentally discharged or from an unauthorized use.  The Director of Public Safety is encouraging all  residents who keep such firearms in their homes, particularly those who have younger children in the household, to take advantage of this program.

These gun safety locks will be distributed at no cost to any resident requesting them.  "Keep our children safe" by properly storing and securing firearms.
